What makes a church work?

January 7th, 2008

Colossians 3:12-14
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

What makes a church work? A focus on others instead of ourselves!

A heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience”—every one of those words reflects a focus away from self, a focus on other people. In fact, none of the things in this passage could describe a self-centred person.

So we could answer the opposite question, too: What stops the church from working like it should? Self-centred people!

Are you frustrated with your church?

Ask yourself, what am I bringing to my church?

Do I approach church with a mindset that focuses on others or on myself?

Remember Jesus’ example: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).

Today God wants you to allow Him to meet all of your love-needs, so that you’re free to give love in your relationships with others. Put on what He suggests, so you don’t feel put upon: “Put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.”

New Year

January 1st, 2008

The new year is a time that inspires new hope in us all.  It is an opportunity to resolve and commit to live our lives in a way that reflects our deepest values.

The new year is a time where we are reminded that we always have the opportunity to begin anew — to make an earnest, fresh start.

The new year is a new canvas upon which we can create images of peace and joy, harmony and inspiration.

But even in our rush to create something new, let’s take time to remember with gratitude the many moments that have come together and conspired to bring us this new year.  This new year is manifesting through the medium of all the years that have proceeded it.  It is constituted and contains within all the thoughts and experiences that came before it.

So as we open our hearts to meet the new year and the abundant hope it bears, let us all take a quiet moment and remember with gratitude the gifts that the previous year has brought us.  The many lessons it has taught us.  The good people it has introduced to us. The beloved people who it took along with it.  The bright moments of inspiration and even the dark moments where we realized our inner strength.  The moments of love, compassion, peace, and promise. The moments we wished would never end.
